DR. NAJM-UL-ISLAM'S EARLY LETTERS

Dr. Syed Jawed Iqbal

Abstract

Dr.  Najm-ul-Islam  was   the  Ex-Chairman,  Department  of  Urdu, University of Sindh and the First Editor of Research Journal "TAHQIQ" Jamshoro. In 1951, when he was 18 years or so, he joined literary magazine "MAIYAR" published from Merath, India. A special issue (TANQEED NUMBER) of "MAIYAR", ranked next to "NIGAR" (1946) in Urdu Literary Journalism. This  attempt had been appreciated at scholastic level. In this article, three letters of Dr. Najm have been presented that had been written as the editor of "MAIYAR", to different article writers. The first letter had been written to Moullana Arshi, 2nd to Iftikhar Azmi and we don't know to whom the 3rd letter had been writing. Dr. Najm has presented "MAIYAR" as a representative of literary thought and constructive literature, which was against the progressive ideology and parallel to Islamic literature. What were the objectives of Dr. Najm introducing constructive literature and its impacts? The details can be found in the "Editorial" of "TANQEED NUMBER" and to some extend in these letters.  Their letters of Dr. Najm are not only a memoir of editorship of "MAIYAR" but also a very imported reference to his literary life.
